Principal's Corner

Interview with Ms. Washington, Foxfire Principal

How long have you been a principal?
15 years

What ideas can you share with our school from your past experiences?
I plan to implement enriching programs, community based organizations, and as many tools as possible for our staff to grow as individuals.  Respect among staff and administration build a collaborative environment filled with joy, love and happiness. In addition, increased parent involvement in the school PTA.

Most Rewarding parts of your job?
When you see children attaining their goals.  Feedback from parents how much  they appreciate the hard work of teachers and staff.  Children going on to higher education and mirroring attributes they learned in our school.

Most Challenging parts of your job?
Some of the challenges are budget cuts, lack of enrichment programs, and lack of support for children with special needs.

What are your goals for Foxfire?
My vision is to ensure all children have opportunities to grow, physically, academically, socially and emotionally.  Also, to create a pleasant learning environment for all working towards the same goal.  Keeping our eye on the prize, while ensuring all students are nurtured and have access to doors of opportunity.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of school?
Travel, quality time with family and friends, music of all different varieties.

At Foxfire School we encourage students and parents to support the School Uniform Policy.  The uniform consists of a white collared shirt, and navy blue slacks or skirts.
"As part of our Safe School Plan, the Yonkers Public Schools has adopted a School Uniform Policy for all students in prekindergarten through grade 12. The wearing of school uniforms enables school personnel to identify those students assigned to the building and reduces absenteeism and competition over dress. It may also contribute to improved academic performance and self-esteem." - Yonkers Public Schools

In our effort to raise awareness and prevention, Foxfire will conduct an anti-bullying campaign for the month of October. This month we will host a number of activities/events to help spread information about bullying with the hopes of creating a school environment free of harassment and discrimination. Students will participate in poster contests, writing contests and will learn about different forms of bullying. Our students will also learn how everyone plays a role when it comes to bullying prevention.

Thank you to all parents who attended Open House, we appreciate all your support!

Thanks to the firefighters from Yonkers Fire Department 309!

The entire third grade tasted various types of apples and created a bar graph.  Also, we watched short clips on Discovery Education about Johnny Appleseed.  We cooked homemade applesauce The peels and cores were placed in compost.  It was a great time!

On Friday, October 3rd, Ms. Ricciardi's 4th graders celebrated their hard work and improvement in writing for the month of September. The students used the writing process to compose goal paragraphs, autobiographies, and personal journals. They learned that good writing takes time and effort. During our celebration, each student shared his or her favorite journal with their classmates while snacking on a variety of delectable apple products donated by our parents and teachers. Mrs. Majors and Mrs. Eugenio joined us as we listened to some interesting sensory writing. As we listened, the students made us feel, see, hear, smell, and taste their trips to the farm, feelings about a special person in their lives, or stories about their pets. The journals were as tasty as the apple treats! We also integrated science into our writing by learning the life cycle of an apple tree. We are very proud of our students and know they will continue to grow and improve everyday. Thanks to all who participated in this great celebration!

Pictures to come...
